Journalism
For the past ten years I have been a regular fiction reviewer for the Sunday Times. In recent months I have reviewed new or reissued novels by, among others, Howard Jacobson, Garrison Keillor, Philip Roth, Aravand Adiga, Nick Hornby, Ismail Kadare, Steve Toltz, Kate Mosse, Alaa Al Aswany, Sandor Marai, Tim Winton, Frederick Raphael and Patrick Gale.
In the 1990s I was for several years a weekly columnist on classical music and jazz for the Mail-on-Sunday. It was a challenge and pleasure to try to communicate the joys of this music plainly (even, God forbid, with humour) to a mass readership. It was also nice to upgrade my CD collection . . .
I have also recently started reviewing music books for the Sunday Times.
I have also written articles and reviews for a wide range of other publications, including the Guardian, New Statesman, Cosmopolitan, Elle, Times Literary Supplement and London Review of Books.
